Where Do I Belong?
Where Do I Belong?

Circumstances can be better guides to God’s will than blessings. Even though you’re blessed, when things are getting stirred up, stopped up, or full of strife, get ready God might be making a move.
Difficulties that come out of nowhere aren’t designed to cause you to despise God, they’re design-ed to give you direction from God. Pay attention to more than your blessings (Gen 26:12-33).
v. 12-16. You can be sure that divine favor is related to diligent effort. It’s good to work hard and enjoy the benefits. But the spoils of your sweat may become the source of strife (Pro. 27:4).
Don’t be surprised when others shovel dirt to impede your progress. Take envy seriously, it’s destructive. God’s people should expect to be expelled by the world not encouraged or embraced.
v. 17-22. Envy and strife can reveal who your people really are and the place you don’t belong.
Your people won’t be the ones throwing dirt on your blessings. Quietly dig another well (Rom 12:18).
When we get too comfortable in a world we don’t belong remember the wells your spiritual fathers dug and the landmarks they left behind (Pro. 22:28, Josh 4:6-7).
What landmarks are you leaving for generations to come? They may not notice them, appreciate them, or take advantage of them until we’re long gone. That’s okay. Leave them anyway!
v. 18-19. The enemy seeks to fill the wells of springing water dug by generations past. We don’t need all things new! Revival is found in recovering God’s word, the prayer meeting, sacrifice…
v. 23 Circumstances offer guidance not guarantees. We may have to leave the wells we’ve dug and blessings enjoyed to settle into God’s will. Upon arrival, He’ll confirm with His word (24-25).
v. 25. When you arrive do three things: (1) build an altar - worship there; (2) pitch your tent – abide there; (3) dig another well - be sustained/refresh others there. We can do this at church too!
v. 26-33. The effort to move into God’s will is worth it. You’ll be in a good place when the enemy shows up and for spiritual battles to come. Your children will remember it too (Gen 46:1-3a).

Difficulties that come out of nowhere aren’t designed to cause you to despise God, they’re design-ed to give you direction from God. But you might need to dig a few wells before you get there.
Let’s Take the Message Home:
Beer-sheba represents a place of significant spiritual experience. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob knew about this place. Where’s yours? Identify the landmarks you’ll use to let your children know.
What circumstances might God be using – the frustration that He is using for your motivation – to move you to some better place? List things that are stirred up or stopped up - shovels of dirt.
How might God be using envy or rejection to show you who your people really are and aren’t? Write the place you feel you most belong and why. How might we make church this for others?
